Oils I Use For My Beauty Routine

No matter what skin type you have, you can benefit from using natural carrier oils to enhance your skin care routine. Oils have a bad reputation when it comes to cleansing. You might even steer clear away from oil and moisturizers if you have “oily” skin. But in fact, you can cleanse your skin with oils!

If you are curious what a carrier oil is, please re-visit the previous Irie Body® blog post explaining what a carrier oil is here!

Oils for cleansing & Moisturizing

You can use carrier oils for cleansing your skin and for moisturizing. Oils such as coconut and grapeseed can actually extract impurities from your skin and aid in a cleansing routine. Some products, such as oil based body scrubs, work to clean the skin and simultaneously keeps it moisturized.  This way, some oil based products serve multiple purposes.

Pick Your Favorite Based On Skin Type

Even though you can cleanse with oils, not all oils have the same comedogenic rating. A great way to explain a comedogenic rating is “an oil has a comedogenic rating of 0 is widely believed to be non comedogenic and will not clog your pores” (Holistichealthherbalist.com )

Some oils have a higher comedogenic rating and some have less. Depending on your skin type some oils may work more efficiently than others when using them to treat your skin. For instance, I use coconut oil on my body for soaking in the bathtub or moisturizing. Coconut oil has a comedogenic rating of 4.  So far no carrier oil I’ve used on my body has caused any skin irritation or breakouts (thankg goodness).

Even though I can use coconut oil all day, every day for the skin on my body, my face is a whole different story.  I reserve a few of the lighter oils for my face. So far, argan, grapeseed, and hemp seed oils have not caused my face to breakout. Grapeseed has a comedogenic rating of 1.

My young adulthood days saw a lot of breakouts before I used natural ingredients for my skin. I definitely stayed away from any product having to do with oils and my face. After time I came to realize that certain carrier oils can be used for taking makeup off and moisturizing.  Today I gently massage hempseed oil on my face before cleansing with a facial bar soap. This step helps remove makeup and unclogs my pores before using soap to cleanse further. I follow up with a toner (also contains some oils & extracts) and a facial moisturizer which is grapeseed oil based. All of the cleansing products I use on my face I formulated myself and have significantly improved my acne.

Your turn

If you are new to the wonderful world of natural oils, start your journey today! I would suggest starting with oils lower on the comedogenic scale at first and then build from there. In the end, oil is our friend!
